All Web, All the Time

While Al Gore might claim it, the Web was first created around 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee working at CERN in Europe.

Here’s a photo of Tim’s computer — the world’s first Web server. Doesn’t it feel like it was centuries ago? It’s hard to recall what life was like pre-Web. We still shared information via the phone and fax — even by (gasp!) postal mail. Despite the birth of the PC almost a decade prior, there were typewriters in many offices. Software came on delicate floppy discs that had to be handled carefully.

It’s a testament to the power of the Web that we have less and less recall of business life before it. Today we’re working faster, more accurately and with better results. We’d all agree that the Web has had a significant impact on politics, but Bruce La Fetra points out that it’s also involved in college politics. In this issue of Insight, Mike Mace discusses corporate blogging (impossible without the Web), takes a witty look at Web 2.0 vs. SaaS and shows us what might be the lamest feature found on a corporate blog. And take a look at my article on virtualization to find out more about what constitutes IT folks’ version of nirvana if we’ll only package and deploy an SOA solution once throughout an entire enterprise. Then, win virtual markets.

Regards,
